Index to Impressions Magazine

Not to be confused with the checklist index.

This index to Impressions magazine includes:

Citations are in the form “volume.number” (e.g. “2.6” for vol 2, no. 6) or “volume.number.page” (e.g. “1.12.263” for vol. 1, no. 12, p. 263). Articles from 1899 (confusingly also labelled by Elder as “Volume 1”) are cited “1899.number.page” (e.g. “1899.3.1” for vol. 1, no. 3, p. 1).

In 1904, Elder changed the magazine’s pagination scheme. Beginning with Volume 5, number 2, the advertising section (under the header Publishers’ Bulletin) was no longer included in the pagination sequence. In addition, the preliminary pages were similarly excluded. This forced me to invent an artificial numbering system for the purposes of this index. I decided to use lower-case roman numerals for preliminary pages, and the following scheme for the advertising section: if the last numbered page of text in an issue is “25,” then the following pages of advertisements are paginated “25a,” “25b,” “25c,” etc.

Some authors were credited only with initials, presumably to maintain their anonymity, and many of these authors have not yet been identified.

Abbreviations:

  • ifc = inside front cover
  • ibc = inside back cover
  • bc = back cover
  • supp = supplement
  • i, ii = preliminary pages in an issue where not part of the official pagination (Vol. 5, no. 2, et seq.)
  • e.g. 25a, 25b, 25c … = artificial pagination scheme for advertising sections where not part of the official pagination (Vol. 5, no. 2, et seq.)

Serialization of Impressions of Ukiyo-Ye, by Dora Amsden

Dora Amsden’s Impressions of Ukiyo-Ye (1905) first appeared in serial form in Impressions Quarterly. The text in the book appears to be exactly the same as in the magazine.

  • “The Romance of Hokusai,” 3.3.51, became Chapter 5, “The Romance of Hokusai”
  • “Utamaro,” 3.4.75, became Chapter 4, “Utamaro”
  • “The Rise of Ukiyo-Ye,” 4.1.3, became Chapter 1, “The Rise of Ukiyo-Ye”
  • “Genroku,” 4.2.44, became Chapter 2, “Genroku”
  • “The Actor-Print Designers of Torii,” 4.3.66, became Chapter 3, “The School of Torii”
  • “Hiroshige,” 4.4.87, became Chapter 6, “Hiroshige”

Serialization of The Simple Home, by Charles Keeler

Charles Keeler’s The Simple Home (1904) first appeared in serial form in Impressions Quarterly. The text in the book is almost exactly the same as in the magazine, with occasional editorial changes.

Some Keeler researchers point to the article “Society” on 5.3.80 and call this “the missing chapter,” proposing that this essay was originally intended for the book but deleted in editorial review. The chief evidence is page 5.3.ifc, which notes that “Society” is the “first paper containing ‘The Simple Home’ series.” In fact, a second essay entitled “Work” appears on 5.4.94 and is subtitled “Second Paper,” a clear link to “Society” in the previous issue. “Society” and “Work” are more similar to each other than either is to the text of The Simple Home, suggesting there might be two missing chapters. However, the counter-argument is the subhead for “The Garden” on page 5.1.12, published six months previously, reading “The concluding paper in the series on ‘The Simple Home.’” Your editor remains skeptical, and thinks further evidence is required to rule these as missing chapters.

  • “The Growth of the Home,” 4.1.17, became Chapter 1, “The Spirit of the Home”
  • “The Building of the Home,” 4.2.41 and 4.3.71, became Chapter 3, “The Building of the Home”
  • “The Furnishing of the Home,” 4.4.95, became Chapter 4, “The Furnishing of the Home”
  • “The Garden,” 5.1.12, became Chapter 2, “The Garden”
